Geographic link to overweight and obesity

About half the population or 10.8 million people were classed as overweight or obese with obesity alone — having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more — climbing from 11% in 1989 to 28% in 2011—12.

The National Health Performance Authority (NHPA) breakdown of 61 Medicare Local areas, published today, shows that while the number of overweight people has skyrocketed overall since 1989, the problem appears closely linked to geographic area.

Western NSW was the ML area with the highest rates of overweight
