Get a clean catch urine from a baby in five minutes

A Victorian doctor has come up with a quick and simple way to obtain a clean catch urine sample from infants who are not yet toilet trained.

Gentle suprapubic stimulation with a cold, wet gauze triggers the cutaneous voiding reflex and hastens urination in young children, a study by trainee paediatrician Dr Jonathan Kaufman has shown.

Frustrated by having to wait for up to an hour for a baby to spontaneously void urine to collect a sample, Dr Kaufman hypothesised that the newborn voiding reflex could be triggered by gentle cutaneous stimulation.
