Government to fund mesh removal surgery

Move follows a Senate inquiry into the debilitating side effects

Women who require surgery to remove transvaginal mesh will have their procedures paid for by Medicare from July.

Hundreds of women with mesh implants have reported side effects including debilitating pain, recurrent infections and emotional trauma, according to a recent Senate report, and the TGA banned mesh products used to treat organ prolapse late last year.

The Federal Government said on Sunday that it had fast-tracked recommendations from its MBS Review Taskforce to fund mesh removal surgery.
