Government wants penalty rates review

The Federal Government is urging the Fair Work Commission to consider the impact of employment costs on employers as it conducts its review of modern awards.

In its submission, the Abbott Government said there should also be a review of penalty rates, once the transitional arrangements included in most modern awards have concluded on 30 June 2014.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia also raised the issue of penalty rates in its submission to the Commission, imploring it to attribute more weight to section 139 of the Fair Work Act, which states “a modern award may include terms about” overtime and penalty
