Govt choosing unwisely on glucose strips: GP

A GP academic has criticised the Choosing Wisely campaign for encouraging a blanket ban on blood glucose test strips in type 2 diabetes patients not using insulin.

Melbourne GP Dr John Furler has joined with diabetes researchers in arguing that a distinction needs to be made between “structured” and “unstructured” blood glucose self-monitoring.

While unstructured self-monitoring has been shown to have little clinical benefit, there is evidence that structured self-monitoring reduces HbA1c and improves patients’ wellbeing, the
