Govt moots staggered rebates for care plans

The Federal Government is considering paying Medicare rebates for chronic disease management plans by instalments rather than as a one-off payment when the plan is created.

Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek (pictured) raised the option, saying a “broader conversation” was needed on how CDM items — the annual cost of which have grown from $237 million in 2008 to $478 million last year — are best used.

The Department of Health and Ageing has been discussing a revamp of the items with the main GP groups in a bid to lessen red tape.
