Govt urged to act fast in scrapping rural incentive system

The Australian Standard Geographical Classification – Remoteness Areas (ASGC-RA) system replaced the Rural, Remote and Metropolitan Areas (RRMA) index in July last year and dictates the incentives a GP will receive for relocating to, or staying in, a given town or city.

A senate inquiry into the factors affecting the supply of health professionals in rural areas, held over the past six months, heard repeated evidence from rural GPs and doctors’ groups about how the ASGC-RA system unfairly equated small towns like Moree with much larger centres like Townsville.
