GP banned for five years after misconduct

The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal this month found Dr Yusuf Bhamjee guilty of professional misconduct following allegations – some of which he admitted – about his clinical behaviour while working at three practices in South East Queensland from 2007 to 2010.

The tribunal said that for 16 patients Dr Bhamjee prescribed drugs not clinically indicated or at levels “grossly in excess of what would be considered necessary for the patient’s condition”.

For nine of those patients, the drugs included anabolic steroids and testosterone medications “prone to abuse for non-therapeutic purposes such as body building”.

Dr Bhamjee claimed to have no experience with those drugs as they were not available for prescription in South Africa. However, the tribunal said that did “not excuse his failure to properly inform himself about proper prescribing practices”.
