GP: I'm sick of working for a charity in a first-world country

A long-serving rural GP has vowed to walk away from his practice on the day the $7 co-payment becomes a reality.

Dr Horst Herb, 51, who has practised in the NSW town of Dorrigo for 13 years in its general practice and hospital, says he has had enough of “working as a charity in a first-world country”.

He views the co-payment as the last straw, and predicts that general practice is set to become extremely unpleasant, as practices struggling to remain viable begin charging patients with limited means.
