GP in ‘infatuation’ case deregistered

Melbourne-based Dr John Barry Myers escaped the longer penalty of a two-year cancellation, requested by the Medical Board of Australia, with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal recommending he undertake counselling.

Dr Myers was treating the patient’s mother, with whom the patient and her children lived, in 1998 when she was referred to Dr Myers with osteoporosis, social problems and depression.

In 1999 she became “infatuated with Dr Myers, expressing intense feelings of love and affection in writing
