GP volunteer input high, but no voice in planning

An AMA position statement said that in natural disasters GPs often faced damage to their practice and injuries to loved ones or themselves but were often “keen to get services open and available in their local community”.

The AMA said to improve preparation for disasters and emergencies GPs should:

  • Have complete and up-to-date back-up systems for all clinical and practice data.
  • Have representation on any relevant local disaster planning committee.
  • Plan for a temporary practice location.
