GPs are not missing bowel cancer symptoms, says expert

Claims that GPs are missing bowel cancer symptoms reflect a lack of understanding of the diagnostic challenges in primary care, according to a GP and cancer researcher.

Professor Jon Emery (pictured), professor of primary care cancer research at the University of Melbourne, said a national campaign to encourage GPs to refer more patients for colonoscopy overlooked the fact that bowel cancer symptoms were not always immediately obvious and could be similar to those of less serious conditions.
