GPs in the dark on medicine shortages

Prescription drug shortages are becoming a daily occurrence as a result of the PBS price-lowering policy, with GPs often the last to learn about drugs being unavailable, a study shows.

Although manufacturing problems are usually cited as reasons for prescription medications being in short supply, the government’s policy on price reductions means that wholesalers and pharmacies are increasingly reluctant to hold stocks of products that may be affected by quarterly price reductions, a survey of 20 retail pharmacists has revealed.
