GPs disagree on best practice cystitis treatment

GPs have rejected calls for antibiotics to be made available to women over the counter for uncomplicated cystitis, saying self-diagnosis is risky and may miss the underlying cause.

An article in the BMJ on Wednesday says women should be able to access a short course of antibiotics for urinary tract infections without a prescription as this would improve treatment rates and reduce pressure on busy GPs.
