GPs, don’t be lax on this vax for older patients

Doctors are being urged to ensure their older patients have had the pneu­mococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV) in the wake of an Australian study showing it reduces time in hospital for cardiovascular events by one-third.

In a longitudinal, population-based study in Newcastle, which included 1074 participants aged 65 and older at baseline with no history of CV events, data was analysed for 91 patients who had an event during the 11-year follow-up.

Among patients who had events, PPV was significantly associated with a 35% reduction in bed-days when adjusted for the influenza
