GPs embrace telehealth with Skype

GPs and specialists are embracing new incentives for telehealth, with 7000 video consultations performed in the first six months of the Federal Government's telehealth initiative, many using Skype.

The initiative, aimed at GPs and specialists working outside inner metropolitan areas and rural Australia, kicked off on 1 July last year, offering a $6000 one-off grant to each doctor on completion of one video consultation.

By the end of December last year 1200 doctors across Australia had delivered around 7000 telehealth services under the scheme,
