GPs exceed antibiotic guidelines ninefold: study

Antibiotics are being overprescribed for acute respiratory infections at rates up to nine times greater than guidelines recommend, GP data derived from the BEACH study suggest.

The average GP is writing antibiotic prescriptions for 57% of patients presenting with acute respiratory infections whereas only 6-13% patients would receive them if Therapeutic Guidelines recommendations were followed, a study by Bond University researchers has found.
