GPs feel pressure over antibiotic prescribing

GPs are being bombarded with new advice and quality standards on antibiotic use after being accused of caving in to patient pressure to prescribe antibiotics for colds and flu.

As part of Antibiotic Awareness Week, GPs have been given a set of nine new antibiotic stewardship care standards that include requirements to counsel patients, document reasons for prescribing antibiotics and avoid the use of broad spectrum agents.
