GPs key to preventing 250,000 avoidable admissions

Improved GP-led care could prevent more than 250,000 unnecessary hospital admissions a year, a report claims.

Released by the Grattan Institute on Monday, the report also argues that the funding mechanism for general practice is out-dated, designed to deal with "infectious disease, wars and accidents".

Called Chronic Failure in Primary Care, the report says “GPs are vital”, but it condemns the Medicare fee-for-service system for failing to support them in chronic disease
