GPs may be frozen out of shared care
GPs fear they are being frozen out of patient rebates for shared care during pregnancies, following the rewrite of MBS obstetric item descriptors.
Alterations to Medicare item 16591 mean antenatal patients can no longer claim the $142.65 rebate for a GP to plan and manage their pregnancy if they have already linked up with an obstetrician who will attend the birth. Similar restrictions are also being made to item 16590, which covers GPs or obstetricians attending the birth.
