GPs to pay back $1m in Medicare pay bungle

Medicare will strip more than one million dollars from nearly 300 doctors following a bureaucratic bungle.

The bungle affects payments made through the General Practice Rural Incentive Program, a scheme designed to encourage doctors to remain in rural communities.

Australian Doctor has been told that 293 doctors were overpaid $1.1 million in August last year. Forty doctors were underpaid to the tune of $200,000.

Medicare letters have been sent to the doctors telling them of the stuff-up.
