GPs told to send injured workers back sooner

The change takes place from the start of April in NSW, where WorkCover says GPs must now fill in a ‘certificate of capacity’ describing what an injured worker can do, replacing the old medical certificate.

Under the change, WorkCover wants GPs to:

  • Set realistic expectations about when the patient can return to work
  • Create treatment plans aimed at remaining at work during recovery
  • Shift the focus to what the patient can do, from what they can’t do
