GPs urged to order fewer vitamin B12 and folate tests

Vitamin B12 and folate tests should not be ordered for patients with non-specific symptoms such as weakness and tiredness, say pathologists.

In a position statement, the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPA) says vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies should only be suspected in patients with:

  • neuropsychiatric symptoms
  • haematological disorders
  • malabsorption 
  • type 1 diabetes 
  • those who are malnourished and undernourished, and those on PPIs long term.
