Guideline update after ACE/ARB confusion

The guidelines, released in May 2013, recommended combining an ACE inhibitor with an ARB for blood pressure reduction. However, concerns have since been raised that, due to the pharmacological similarities between the drugs and the potential effect on renal function, not all patients are suitable for combined therapy.

It is now recommended that if a patient is resistant to one drug, and the GP is considering using the two drugs in combination, that a review by a specialist be carried out due to potential side effects. For patients with unresponsive hypertension, it is recommended
