Half asylum seeker detainees attend ED: study

The retrospective study, conducted by doctors in the emergency department of Royal Darwin Hospital, showed that 518 asylum seekers detained in Darwin attended the emergency department 770 times in 2011, an estimated 50% of the total detained population.

One in five of the attendees were children and one in three were found to have psychiatric problems, most commonly self-harm, which accounted for 18% of attendances.

“The high numbers of emergency department attendances and repeat attendances support the assertion that primary care
