Hambleton refuses to back down in asylum stoush
The health effects of mandatory detention on asylum seekers will continue to be an issue for doctors, despite politicians from both major parties telling the AMA to butt out yesterday.
Liberal MP Don Randall and Labor MP Graham Perrett both criticised comments made by president, Dr Steve Hambleton, during an AMA parliamentary dinner on Wednesday night.
“The AMA believes that the system of mandatory detention of asylum seekers is inherently harmful to the physical and mental health of detainees,” Dr Hambleton told the dinner. “The harm is especially acute in the case of children.
