Hambleton’s cross-Tasman trek

The AMA has long held that the New Zealand switch to ML-type bodies called Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) a decade ago disenfranchised too many GPs and should have been a warning to the Australian government against the replacement of GP divisions.

The New Zealand Medical Association has also urged Australia to tread carefully before potentially diluting the central patient care role and governing influence of GPs within primary health care by introducing MLs.

“We can learn things from New Zealand,” Dr Hambleton told MO.
