Harvey takes on ‘fat magnets’, despite lawsuits
TWO defamation lawsuits haven’t shaken anti-weight loss products campaigner Dr Ken Harvey, with the La Trobe University professor calling for the TGA to deregister another weight loss product, which the administration’s Complaints Resolution Panel (CRP) claims has breached advertising standards.
Dr Harvey, currently fighting a $1 million defamation action by SensaSlim founder Peter O’Brien, asked the panel in March to investigate advertised claims by PharmaCare Laboratories over its FatBlaster Reducta and Fat Magnet products.
Dr Harvey said PharmaCare’s claim in various advertising outlets, including on current affairs TV shows, that its product was backed by “two clinical studies” was unsubstantiated.
Last month the CRP upheld Dr Harvey’s complaint and on 10 August wrote to PharmaCare asking it to withdraw advertisements for the product within 14 days.
