Herbal pills behind rise in liver injury: study

Herbal and dietary supplements should not be viewed as harmless as they are now responsible for one in five cases of serious liver injury, US hepatologists warn.

A US review of 839 serious cases of hepatotoxicity found the proportion of cases where herbal and dietary supplements were judged to be the probable or definite cause of the liver injury increased from 2% to 20% between 2004 and 2012.

Dietary supplements used by bodybuilders were the most commonly implicated non-drug cause of liver injury and
