Highly addicted smokers need extra help: expert

GPs should be allowed to prescribe more than one subsidised smoking-cessation therapy to highly addicted patients on low incomes, an Australian expert says.

Associate Professor Renee Bittoun, head of the smoking cessation unit at the University of Sydney, issued the call in the wake of a new study showing that combination therapy is more effective than using just one therapy for men and for those who are highly nicotine-dependent.
