HIV down, STIs up among PrEP users

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is preventing HIV but at the expense of higher rates of STIs from unsafe sex, Victorian experience shows.

An interim report from the Victorian program that provides tenofovir/emtricitabine (Truvada) prophylaxis for people at high risk of HIV showed there was high medication adherence and no new cases of HIV among 114 participants during the first 12 months of the PrEP program.
