Home care safe for infective endocarditis

Patients with infective endocarditis can be treated safely and effectively with IV antibiotics in their own homes, say infectious disease specialists.

A Barwon Health review of 68 patients with infective endocarditis treated through Hospital In The Home (HITH) found the program had a success rate of 94% and a one-year survival rate of 96%.

Patients received daily IV antibiotics, most commonly benzyl penicillin and flucloxacillin, either by intermittent dosing or continuous infusion by a HITH nurse
