Hospitalisation sparks concern over poor acupuncture guidelines
Acupuncture guidelines have been called into question after a 16-year-old girl spent almost a month in hospital with a severe infection from an acupuncture needle that was placed in her neck for 24 hours.
The young woman was treated with acupuncture by her GP after presenting with left-sided neck pain.
One 5cm needle was inserted into her neck for 15 minutes; another 5cm needle was fully inserted with only the handle visible for 24 hours.
