Hospitalisations of over-75s 'never preventable' under proposed new PPH indicator for GPs

Primary care quality would instantly improve by 33% per cent under the changes

Hospitalisations of patients aged 75 or older would no longer be considered 'preventable' under a proposed revamp to how the quality of care in general practice is measured in Australia.

As currently defined by the AIHW, potentially preventable hospitalisations (PPHs) includes 22 medical conditions that should have been avoided, in theory, through primary care interventions, including influenza, pneumonia, asthma exacerbations, COPD, angina and some complications of diabetes.
