Hospitals feel pain of govt budget cuts
The fallout follows Canberra’s recently announced $107 million budget cuts, which will also see elective surgery for 1300 patients across three Melbourne hospitals cancelled over the next five months.
The president of the Rural Doctors Association of Victoria, Dr Mike Moynihan, said these cutbacks would affect every rural hospital in Victoria.
“Just this week Colac Hospital has announced they will be closing their after-hours emergency service at night from 10pm to 7am, forcing patients to travel around an hour to the nearest open emergency department,” he said.
He said the cuts would also place patients at risk.
“Delays in the time to treatment compromises safety and increases the risk of mortality and long-term disability. [In the case of Colac, patients] are being asked to take themselves to Geelong or to call the single ambulance in the district,” he said.
