How to avoid potential conflicts of interest
A summary of new guidelines from the AMA
20th April 2018
The AMA has released new guidelines for avoiding or reducing the potential for conflicts of interest.
Here is a summary of the main points applicable to all doctors:
- Always be up-front about relevant interests to patients.
- Seek independent advice to determine whether an actual or perceived conflict of interest exists.
- Do not accept or offer any inducement, gift or hospitality from patients or third parties (such as drug companies) that may affect, or be perceived to affect, patient care.
