Study connects higher weight status to healthcare avoidance

Overweight and obese women have a tendency to avoid seeing their doctor due to past experiences of bias and discrimination, research shows.

While the study is focused on the US health system, it may have some relevance for Australia with previous research here suggesting obese patients are still encountering fat-phobic healthcare workers and discrimination from some doctors.

In the latest study out of Drexel University in Philadelphia, the researchers found that a weight-inclusive approach may work better than the current weight normative approach.
