While diet, exercise and behaviour modification are key to obesity management, a successful long-term strategy should also include avoiding or minimising medication-related weight gain, according to US endocrinologists.

In their paper, published in Gastroenterology, the researchers underscore the need for clinicians to assess the potential side effects and interactions of drugs they prescribe for obese patients, and to familiarise themselves with alternatives that limit weight gain or help with weight loss.
