How to lower diabetes risk with alcohol

People who drink alcohol regularly are less likely to develop diabetes than abstainers, a five-year study of more than 70,000 people confirms.

But not all drinks are created equal, the researchers caution, and some drinking patterns reap greater rewards than others.

In line with previous research, moderate to high intake of wine is associated with the lowest risk of diabetes while the latest study reveals that drinking spirits has no protective effect at all.

In fact, spirit consumption is linked to an increased risk of diabetes in women.
