IMGs figure strongly in workforce

The Doctors in Focus report tracked the number of doctors in the system between 1999 and 2009 using data from the AIHW Medical Labour Force Survey, the Medical Training Review Panel, the Immigration Department and Medicare. It found the contribution of IMGs rose to 41% of Australia’s full-time general practice workload and those numbers had boomed over the previous five years.

Medicare data showed IMGs were still more likely to be found in outer regional and remote areas where they comprised 51% and 47% of the workforce respectively, compared with 39% in major cities and 44% in
