‘Importing’ IMGs no solution for rural GP shortage

Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) president, Dr Paul Mara said the “tide is turning against IMG importation as a policy solution”.

“People are pointing out there are ethical issues about stripping doctors out of countries with their own severe shortages of health professionals to fix our problems in Australia,” he said. “We currently have a shortage of internship placements for young doctors wanting to train as GPs and an under-supply of GPs in rural areas, but the numbers of IMGs applying for GP training through GPET shows simply importing overseas-trained doctors does not provide
