Inner-city GPs cite fears over after-hours 'gouging'

Inner-city GPs in Perth fear after-hours deputising services are "gouging" Medicare and "taking patients out of the system", according to the AMA WA.

President Dr Michael Gannon (pictured) says growth in the emerging industry, which has seen Medicare spending on urgent home visits more than double in two years, is generating unease among inner-urban GPs.

Medicare spending on MBS item 597 — the commonly used item number for urgent after-hours home visits — has jumped from $2.6 million in 2013 to $6.1 million in 2015 in the Perth
