Insomnia linked to atrial fibrillation risk

Poor sleepers - whether or not they have sleep apnoea - are at risk of developing atrial fibrillation, a new analysis shows.

US researchers examined three sources of data, each using a different approach, to isolate and confirm the effects of poor sleep on atrial fibrillation.

Their analyses shows that:

  • Disrupted sleep, including insomnia, is independently associated with atrial fibrillation;
  • People who reported frequent night-time awakening had a 26% higher risk of atrial fibrillation compared with sound sleepers;
