Sex is more than just a nice way to reproduce or while away the time; it also serves to bond couples, say researchers.

That may sound obvious, but a team of psychologists from Florida State University in the US report that it’s not the sexual act per se that promotes pair bonding but the sexual afterglow that keeps a relationship going.

Pooling data from two independent longitudinal studies of newlywed couples, the researchers report that the stronger the afterglow, the higher the level of marital satisfaction, both at baseline and overtime.
