Junk food self-regulation ‘not working’
AMA president Dr Steve Hambleton said industry regulation had never worked and it was time for the government to step in.
“Industry regulation doesn’t work, it hasn’t worked so far and it will not work in the future,” Dr Hambleton said.
“Let’s be serious about obesity in this country and let’s inform consumers quickly and easily with traffic light labelling and stop fast food makers targeting children with advertising.
“Food labelling is easy. Reducing advertising is easy. We’ve got to start now or this will be the first generation in history that won’t outlive its parents.”
