Dr Gill, a former remote nurse now 18 months into the rural generalist pathway working at Proserpine Hospital in Queensland, was personally called on to insert chest tubes and stabilise patients before more experienced parties had even shown up.

“It was multi-trauma but because we’re all rural generalists all of us pitched in, all of us put the chest tubes in,” said Dr Gill, who for the second year in succession has been nominated as a finalist for the GPET registrar of the year award.
