Key element of new cervical screening program dropped at last minute

Self-collection tests are on hold indefinitely

The renewed national cervical screening program will launch on Friday without one of its key elements, the Department of Health has revealed.


Just two days out, doctors are being advised not to offer self-collection tests because labs have yet to meet the standards required to qualify for Medicare rebates.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the department advises that the option is unavailable until further notice:
