Late-onset depression a predictor of dementia

Chronic depression that continues into late adulthood is more strongly linked to dementia than single or relapsing episodes, according to a longterm Lancet study that examines the link between cognitive decline and the course of depression.

The findings support the hypothesis that increasing symptoms of depression in older adults may indicate the early stages of dementia.
