Lethal mothballs: experts call for ban

NEONATOLOGISTS are calling for a nationwide ban on mothballs containing naphthalene, claiming they can be lethal for children with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.

Neonatologists from the committee of the Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network claim that around 5% of Australian babies of African, Middle Eastern or Mediterranean descent have G6PD deficiency, putting them at risk of haemolysis and kernicterus when exposed to naphthalene.
