Low death rate for bariatric surgery

Patients undergoing bariatric surgery achieve significant, long-term weight loss with a very low risk of death, according to the first comprehensive meta-analysis of the procedure in a decade.

The review, which pooled data from 164 studies with over 160,000 patients, reported a 30-day mortality rate of just 0.31%, significantly lower than those reported in two previous meta-analyses.

However, complication and reoperation rates remained relatively high at 17 and 7%, respectively, the US-based authors said.
